Orthopaedic SurgeryGeneral SurgeryWe have a purpose built sterile surgery with a state of the art anaesthetic machine and monitoring equipment to enable us to perform surgery on your pet. We perform a vast range of operations such as desexing, exploratory surgery, orthopaedics for broken bone repair, cruciate ligament repair, caesareans, tumour and lump removals, wound stitches, intestinal obstructions, urinary tract surgery, and more. Patients are constantly supervised by qualified veterinary nurses throughout their procedures using modern technology to monitor heart rate, respiration rate and blood pressure. Orthopaedic SurgeryThis is an area of special interest for The Vet Centre where we receive referrals from other veterinary clinics in the top of the South Island. The clinic is fortunate to have the Swiss AO Synthese bone plating system, the same that is used in people. This system is made from the highest quality stainless steel and is designed to allow compression plating. Compression of the bone ends facilitates healing and minimises the potential for a 'non-union'. Special screw applicators fit in to off-set holes in the bone plate to pull under compression the two bone ends together. Not all bones require the application of a bone plate. Pins fitted to the central part of the bone or screws as 'lag' screws on their own. Kirschner apparatus systems are available for the compound fragmented fracture too. Today, there are very few fractures that we cannot repair making amputation of a limb virtually a thing of the past. |
