Veterinary Acupuncture
We are proud to offer acupuncture as an alternative treatment method. Andrew and Kelly are both qualified in veterinary acupuncture.
Acupuncture may be defined as the insertion of needles into specific points on the body to cause a desired healing effect. This technique has been used in veterinary practice in china for at least 3000 years to treat many ailments. The Chinese also use acupuncture as preventive medicine against such problems as founder and colic in horses. Acupuncture is used all over the world, either by itself or in conjunction with Western medicine, to treat a wide variety of maladies in every species of domestic and exotic animals. To understand acupuncture and how it works almost requires one to think completely diferently from what we normally understand with our current 'Western" medicine. In a normal healthy animal, energy (Chi) passes around the body in defined pathways called meridians, which connect all organs and tissues together. Acupuncture points are points on the skin near these meridians where the energy flow can be altered. In a diseased state there is an imbalance in the energy flow or blockage. Acupuncture can unblock or increase/decrease the energy flow to normalise the flow of energy. This often requires a formula of acupoints to be used in the treatment of a specific condition. Acupuncture is not a cure-all, but can work very well when it is indicated. Acupuncture is indicated mainly for functional problems such as those that involve paralysis, non-infectious inflammation, and pain. Acupuncture causes the body to release endorphins and hormones while at the same time decreasing inflammation both internally and externally.
