Dairy Cattle

IMG_9566_1.jpgDairy Cattle are a very important part of The Vet Centre.

We are very fortunate to have Dr John Mace who is a leading Dairy Cattle Veterinarian. John was raised on a dairy farm in the Waikato, the heartland of the New Zealand Dairy Industry. John has recently completed the DairyNZ InCalf Advisory course, an invaluable qualification to have in Tasman where reproductive performance is an issue.

Apart from having a large clinical knowledge of the dairy cow requirements and health, John also has studied extensively in Dairy Nutrition, Mastitis and Milk Production.

The practice is a member of the Dairy Cattle Society, a branch of the New Zealand Veterinary Association (NZVA).

Dairy farms in Tasman are spread from the east of Nelson down as far as Murchison where our largest dairy herd is located (2000 cows).

Disease issues are varied and because of our slightly warmer climate we are prone to some diseases more often seen in the North Island; such as Facial Eczema, Liver Fluke and Cattle Ticks. Other diseases more commonly seen are mastitis, scour or enteritis (esp. calf scours) parasites and bloat. In the Spring issues typically encountered are calving or dystocia problems and injuries associated with calving. Metabolic diseases at this time are also common.
