House TrainingHOUSE TRAINING House training should start the minute you arrive home with your puppy, so that you avoid any ‘accidents’ right from the beginning. Take your puppy to the outside area you want it to use. Let it explore the area and if it obliges by urinating or defecating, praise it and give it a reward. Every hour you should take your puppy outside again to the same area, stay there for at least five minutes. If the puppy goes to the toilet in that time, praise and reward them. If it doesn’t go to the toilet in five minutes you are there, take it inside and then go out again in ten minutes. Keep doing this until your patience is rewarded. You will quickly work out your puppy’s rhythm. Other times you should take your puppy out to its toilet area are – as soon as it wakes up from sleep, after drinking and after play. Watch your puppy’s body language for any signs indicating a need to go out – such as circling and sniffing. If a toileting accident does happen inside and you see it happening, growl at him and immediately take him outside to the toileting area. If the puppy then continues to go to the toilet – praise and reward. If you aren’t there at the time puppy toilets inside, all you can do is clean up the mess and carry on with the hourly toilet trips. Generally puppies house train quickly if their owners are diligent and using lots of praise. At night times make sure you take your puppy out to toilet before you go to bed, and if necessary be prepared to get up once or twice in the night to take puppy out.
